Driven by Desire

Heeeyyy, everyone! Guess who's coming on stage right now! It's, ooh, me! That's right, say it again fans, young journalist idol Umi is here to lighten your day and enlighten your mind! It's no joke being an idol, though, the schedule and the, um, questionable rations we travellers get are really killing me. But don't despair, love, hope, and peace will pull through in the end!

Speaking of rations, our share's been cut again. Okuu's Look-alike press-ganged another kid into becoming a prospective traveller today - it's Rafa, second child and second daughter of Margit Ravelli and Archibald Aqua. Hmm, that's funny, I recall hearing a rumour a few days back that she was being groomed to move into an apartment, but it seems that didn't work out. I wonder why...

Whaaa... with a scary face like that? I don't need another psychopathic anarchist on this island! Heaven Heaven Thunder!

I believe my compatriot, covert operations specialist Yuzu has the scoop. "Too blonde," said Okuu's Look-alike, allegedly, "and not really what I was thinking of. Also, with an evil face like that... and who can forget the tentacles?"

Hey, miss supreme dictator overlord person, maybe you could help the poor parents out with a little fashion advice and maybe a plastic surgery subsidy, not ask them to fill out a life insurance application form! And besides, we travellers are already in cramped enough conditions as it is! There are now 12, I repeat twelve travellers including the three of us non-natives waiting to get a boat to our next destination.

But I really shouldn't complain. Somehow I feel that being here... being alive is much better than being placed at the mercy of fate, a more oblivious and ignorant dictatorial overlord, or that freakish time distortion from the other day. And besides, more travellers means more of a crowd for me! They even throw vegetables on stage every now and then to supplement my diet and make sure I get my vitamins - thanks so much, fans, I love you all!

Speaking of love, today another happy couple decided to tie the knot, with extreme rapidity in fact. It's almost suspicious, hehe...

It's really not what I planned ... or expected. But I'm glad everyone's happy.

Today, Shanghai Margatroid and Kanako Yasaka, whom as we can remember just become a couple three days ago (albeit after fifty or so 'first dates'), decided to finalise their partnership, much to the celebration of their friends and family and also to Okuu's Look-alike's chagrin. Can you see the happy faces of the wedding guests? I'll spell it out for you.

The four people at the centre of the picture are, from left to right, Alice Margatroid and Kyubey Incubator, Shanghai's parents! To Kyubey's right is Suwako Moriya, Shanghai's best friend and the person whom Okuu's Look-alike had been trying to entangle Kanako with. And to Suwako's right, it's Yuuka Kazami, the genocidal flower lover who's also Kanako's best friend!

The other four look to be just other close friends of the happy couple, but it's interesting how Sanae Kochiya, Kanako and Suwako's .... 'friend', showed up, as did the married couple of Drake Kitazawa and Youmu Konpaku.on the far right. To Youmu's left is Unyuho Morichika, the second child to be invited to move in as a resident and also the first second-generation Gensokyo Island resident to get married.

Isn't it amazing how guests at a wedding celebration can be so interlinked? It's more than coincidence alone could possibly achieve. Next time, if you see a wedding taking place, why not take a look at the guests and see how they matter to the happy couple? Ah... the power of love - I can feel my idol's spirit soaring on its silver wings!

I'd hate to be the sucker holding the heart-shaped firework shell if a proposal failed.

Ah, love, that greatest of all emotions. Whether it be familial love, platonic love, romantic love, that other kind of love, love for doll joints ... oh, why does it always bring a tear to my eye? It's the natural desire within all of us to love and be loved. So who better to focus on today than the citizen of Gensokyo Island who can see the deepest desires of all? Please give a warm welcome to Miko Toyosatomimi, the true administrator!

And surely Miko can read that my strongest, deepest desire is to be the greatest idol who's ever lived ... oh, wait, everyone can tell. You don't need special divining powers to know that, heh.

Miko Toyosatomimi
All information correct as of 22 January 2015

Your greatest desire is ... for me to make a contract and become a magical girl...

Name: Miko Toyosatomimi
Nickname: Miko (pronounced 'Prince Shoutoku')
Date of Birth: 7th February 572
Personality: Independent Thinker
Favourite Colour: Purple
Quotation: "Praise my glory!"

Miko Toyosatomimi is the Stage 6 Final Boss character of Touhou 13: Ten Desires by Team Shanghai Alice. She also appeared as a playable character in Touhou 13.5: Hopeless Masquerade. She is the leader of the Taoist faction in Hopeless Masqurade, and she possesses the ability to determine the 'Ten Desires' of any human. What are 'ten desires', anyway? Why not check the wiki for that?

Miko is ... a hard one to pin down. According to the canon sources, Miko is actually the spirit of Prince Shoutoku, a semi-legendary (and very much male) leader of Japan from the Asuka period, who was somehow able to preserve his soul through forbidden Taoist magics, and reappeared in Gensokyo after his story faded into legend. Or maybe Prince Shoutoku was actually secretly a girl all along, it's not all that clear. Let's just accept that Miko Toyosatomimi is somehow both a girl wearing a Vocaloid-esque outfit and headphones with fluffy hair that looks like dog ears and Prince Shoutoku at the same time. Besides, that's how she views herself, at least in the canon material anyway.

Although having the body of a girl, she speaks and conducts herself as if she really is Prince Shoutoku. Whether Shoutoku actually was or wasn't a girl all along is never explained, and is beyond the scope of this discussion. So that's how I've chosen to present him, er, her, whatever. Let's just use 'her' to keep it simple. On Gensokyo Island, Miko looks like a female character but has masculine preferences. Don't worry, she does get the regular complement of fancy dresses too.

Miko Toyosatomimi, in Touhou canon, is a person who aims to gain popularity among the people - whether through religion, power, or deeds, and using any measures, however extreme. Sealing herself away and being reborn as a superhuman being in another age was only the first step, though I hypothesise that transforming into a girl may have also been part of this scheme. But, at least on Gensokyo Island, it seems to work - Miko may not have the most friends of any character, but those she does have hold her in very high esteem and she is regularly at or near the top of the island's popularity charts.

Married at last! Back then I thought the two would friendzone each other forever.

Wife: Marisa Kirisame
Best Friend: Armin Arlert, formerly Yuuka Kazami, Marisa Kirisame
Children: Shoutaro, Mariko

I've discussed the reasons why Miko and Marisa are a special pairing to me on Marisa's character profile. So let's now talk about their actual relationship on Gensokyo Island. Truth be told, things have hardly been smooth between them after they got married, a stark contrast to their lovey-dovey nature before. Perhaps the violent fight between them was a forewarning.

I don't know if having a marriage between two people of nearly-opposite personalities is more likely to break down - though I hope not, for I have many such couples on Gensokyo Island, including Miko and Marisa. I like to think that opposites attract - Marisa is nutty, zany, loopy, and hyperactive, while Miko is a beacon of stability and sensibility, the force of reason. While keeping each other in check, they also express the emotions and thoughts which their partner finds difficult to deal with alone.

All the same, it's fair to say their marriage has been one of the rockiest on the island. No divorce has happened, thankfully, although it has come close (i.e. the confrontation scene - should the Mii choose not to give the relationship another chance, it will result in divorce). It's pretty much a tax on my travel ticket supplies keeping them on good terms with each other, but I'm determined to do so, due to them being one of my OTPs, and my principle that any pairing which has had kids simply should not go about divorcing each other. Think of the children!

Speaking of children, Mii life has also dealt them a bad hand. They have only had two children so far, the fewest of the first-generation islanders, and while both of their children were sent to be travellers, neither has reported back even once and can most likely be presumed lost to the waves, of their bones are coral made. Maybe this might have something to do with their unwillingness to try for more children.

Here's the album photos of Shoutaro and Mariko. Oh dear, their parents sure have aged pretty badly, huh?

Food Preferences:
All-time Favourite: Muffin (American style)

Okuu's Look-alike Rating - Muffin: Really Like! How can anyone say no to muffins? Well, I guess they can, if they're the wrong flavour, but as long as it's stuffed with something I like, I can go about stuffing myself with something I like too, which is to say with muffins. Just be careful not to become a muffin top!

Song Participation:
Miko Hatsune in the House, Pop, solo performance
Living Next Door to Alice, Musical, backup singer for Three Dolls Down

Miko's Pop song is one of the most vain-tastically arrogant pieces of work that I could ever create, which any idol would be proud to call their own. It's perfect for someone whose very existence is about becoming as popular as possible.

Wow. Everyone knows Scots are tight, but isn't this going a little too far? Happy Burns Night.

Apartment: Apt. 108
Islander Rating: Borderline Top Tier

Despite being rather ruthless in the pursuit of her goals in Touhou canon, Miko is actually one of the relatively nicer residents on Gensokyo Island. She can be provoked into a fight, perhaps by other islanders questioning her moral code and way of life, but generally she's decent and friendly in a way that's almost bland. In addition, for someone who has the ability to read the 'Ten Desires' of others, she seems to have very little desires herself, and only rarely demands anything more than just your begrudging respect for her princely majesty. Due to not wanting very much in the way of material gifts, Miko's islander level has constantly lagged behind the others from the Gensokyo Island pioneer eight and even behind some of the next eight, even despite having a known all-time favourite food.

I do wonder why this is the case. Perhaps Miko is content purely to build up a network of followers among the denizens of Gensokyo Island instead of seeking aid directly from Okuu's Look-alike. Maybe she's already content, having read my desires and knowing that when I saw the selection of clothing available in Tomodachi Life, I simply had to create a Mii of Miko Toyosatomimi. A Miiko Toyosatomiimii, if you will. If you know anything about Miko and her character design, you'll also know that this outfit was made just for her.

It's the headphones wot sealed it. Also note that the gender is set to Male.
