Serving Notice

I've been around Gensokyo Island for quite a bit, trying to get to know this strange little pseudo-Japanese place a little better. And what should catch my eye this morning but a very traditional, dare I say even European form of public announcement, a placard framed and mounted outside the entrance to the Mii Apartments building.

"All residents are to be informed that the time-space distortion will be activated on Monday, 11th May, barring the arrival of a passenger ship before that time

Yours. Gensokyo Island administration."

A leap through space at speeds so incredible they could only be construed as bypassing the passage of time itself. Yes, I thought I was just on a cruise to a nearby island, maybe no farther than the Channel, and now here I am. Clearly, if this island is wielding such distorting powers over its denizens, I suppose it only behoves the island's owner to give them some forewarning, at least.

Curiously enough, tacked just under the proclamation was a photograph, clearly supplied by Aya Shameimaru's news office.

Yeah, her hair sucks and needs some editing. But that isn't the biggest problem right now.

"Think of the children." it was captioned. What a laugh, if what Kiba told me was right, then it's the excessive number of children that are the problem in the first place, isn't it? Something about them sucking out from islanders the will to do anything other than fight with each other and play games.

By some stroke of luck, or possibly misfortune, Shinmyoumaru Sukuna and Overlord Laharl's fourth child, their daughter Lilith, became the poster child for the crisis afflicting this island. Perhaps it was no accident. From my work in Aya's Bunbunmaru Updates department, it seems that the couple, no, Sukuna has actually taken advantage of the malaise afflicting the island to go on a self-promoting publicity blitz of sorts.

Appearing in all manner of news articles and advertisements, it's only a matter of time before we may see Sukuna's face on candy wrappers and can drinks. Perhaps those may be some of the last things travellers to Gensokyo Island take with them before heading on to their next destination.

Sukuna quite likes frolicking in the flowers. Those inward-pointing closed eyes sure do look funny.

In other news today, a party was thrown for one of Gensokyo Island's oldest residents, or should it be more accurately said, younger residents? Kyouko Kasodani, the second islander ever to move in to Gensokyo Island and former best friend of Utsuho Reiuji, better known as Okuu, today celebrated her birthday with friends and loved ones.
According to the records I've seen, Kyouko and Okuu used to be the closest of friends but had a very public falling-out (apparently involving their respective husbands) which led to them no longer being best friends. While they still acknowledge each other it's thought they are no longer really on speaking terms. However, Kyouko did extend an invitation to Okuu's Look-alike to her birthday party, but Okuu's Look-alike declined, citing urgent commitments as the island's administrator. Specifically, checking the date of her birth because it sounded incorrect.

That age sounds wrong, shouldn't it be 4? I'll go check it out.

Perhaps Kyouko's greatest sorrow so far on Gensokyo Island, apart from being driven nearly insane despite (or perhaps because of) her placid personality, would be not having had any of her eight children so far welcomed as a permanent resident of Gensokyo Island. It's merely one in a long series of ordeals for the poor girl, whom Okuu's Look-alike considers her favourite character and yet rewards her by putting her through a nearly endless torment.

The true reasons for Utsuho Reiuji as well as Okuu's Look-alike not attending Kyouko's birthday party may have been a little different, though...

Birth control? What's that? Only godless heretics rebel against the natural, divine-bestowed urge to procreate.

It seems that Utsuho Reiuji might have been preparing for her confinement as her husband Rinnosuke Morichika today confessed, er, announced that he was expecting a tenth child. That's right, ten kids, a Gensokyo Island new record. At this rate they could start a whole sports team. I can't say I'm looking forward to it, though, the radiation fallout could render the entire island uninhabitable.

And my temporary boss Aya Shameimaru managed to legitimately extend her continued hiatus from actual work by applying for maternity leave following the birth of her sixth child Ryoko. Okuu's Look-alike made sure to be present, not simply for the baby's naming ceremony as is traditional, but also to take notes on how the presence of yet more children affected the normal functioning of the island, even after having issued the proclamation mentioned earlier. Mostly certainly, the gathered research data will be of use to island dictators and mad scientists everywhere.

Even as this island seems beset by all manner of problems, its residents have found ways to circumvent measures that have, or should be implemented to cope with its problems. Are the islanders just making use of their fiat and seniority to get around Okuu's Look-alike's attempts to keep the island under control, or is enforcement simply just that lax? Or perhaps there's a much simpler explanation to it?

 Cha-ching!
