The World Wanders

It's quiet... it's too quiet. And that's what worries me most.

That's what Okuu's Look-alike and the other mad scientists on Gensokyo Island discovered. When the island begins to fall silent, that means that the lassitude... the time distortion, the miasma, the tidal wave of baby flesh, is beginning to take over. And in order to quell it, nay, merely forestall it for a time, travellers must be sacrificed to the vortex.

Gensokyo Island being a place that takes Mii Resources in its most literal sense, Okuu's Look-alike has no qualms about tossing the offspring of the island's residents, who are in themselves responsible for the island's predicament, into the great unknown. But as for innocent, uninvolved travellers like us, who are just trying to fulfil the sole purpose for which we were sent into this world...

Toritori here. I'm submitting this editorial to the Bunbunmaru Updates office - it may be the last they ever hear of me.

With the birth of four new children on Gensokyo Island, it has become undeniably obvious that that disaster which necessitated the repeated opening of the time vortex has returned.

It's not hard to come up with a unique name for a kid. What's difficult is coming up with a name that has meaning.

Happy parents Reimu and ZUN, Yuuka and Sycamore, Patchouli and Mao, and Koyomi and Almaz proudly displayed the newest addition to their families, perfectly aware that their children existed solely to torment Okuu's Look-alike for a few short days before being fitted out at living weapons to be dispersed to islands all over the wall. Which is to say, as travellers, bearing a sharply-worded message and a sample of just what monstrosities Gensokyo Island is capable of producing.

It's curious how most parents are perfectly happy with their existence as just another cog in Gensokyo Island's baby making machine but, as it has been scientifically proven that the possession of a baby (excluding the production of that baby and the state following the ababy's maturation into an independent being) is greatly satisfying and placating toward those tensions which inevitably arise in marriages between individuals of conflicting personality groups.

Of course, Aya Shameimaru would have covered the experiences of those happy parents if she wasn't experiencing a little happy time of her own with her beloved Tiger brand Hot Dogs.

You know what they say about Tiger brand Hot Dogs... Chinese medical practitioners can't possibly be wrong.

In the time that I've been on Gensokyo Island, having found out the manner in which Okuu's Look-alike operates the place, I've constantly reiterated my aversion for its more ... mechanically utilitarian practices in its treatment of its residents, the handling of its islanders' children being merely the most egregious of such practices.

The thought that all of this is being done purely for the happiness of its residents, as Okuu's Look-alike claims, is just so blatantly outrageous, and yet there does exist an undeniable ring of truth to it. But at what cost? The manipulation of the minds of islanders into accepting the most monstrous, the most deviant practices as everyday happenings, indeed happenings from which great pleasure and satisfaction is derived. All of the attention, the gifts, the "special treatment", are merely tools to nudge the islanders towards this end.

But I will not rush to heap blame on upon the islanders for their sheeplike, unwavering devotion to Okuu's Look-alike and her mad plans. Perhaps they are merely making the best of a bad situation, to make do with what little happiness they can in this constructed hell. And when true, undeniable happiness does come to the fore, it is a wondrous sight to behold.

Kenji's head is just as big as ever. I bet he can inflate it like a balloon and use it to fly from island to island like a blimp.

Youmu Konpaku and Drake Kitazawa received with delight news of their eldest child, the confusingly-named Kenji, who proudly related in his letter his adventure of having survived four different islands. The tears of joy welling up in their eyes, knowing that their son had not been utterly annihilated by the relentless tides of the wider world, spoke endlessly of their joy that their child had turned out to be something more than the fodder he had been born "to be".

Me? No, I don't think... I try not to think about my parents or how they feel about my travails in distant lands such as this wretched hive Gensokyo Island. What I do know is that I'm still alive, and the best way in which I can make my parents proud - whether or not they even know of my continued existence - would be to survive. Survive Gensokyo Island, survive the warped and bizarre places into which Okuu's Look-alike may toss me, a rag doll whirled about in the ceaselessly violent cyclone of fate.

But it is my view that fate can never be known, and never be pre-determined, or else we would take steps to avoid such a fate and its predictions would no longer hold any truth. The only way to continue would be to believe the impossible... no, to not even conceive of impossibility. To be open-minded enough to believe that anything can happen. Anything, no matter how unlikely, how averse conditions may be, how utterly incomprehsnible and inconceivable... we must make room for it.

No matter how lunatic the record, you just have to charge ahead, and you can make the impossible happen. Fight the pwah!

As impossible as the thought of immortal enemies Kaguya Houraisan and Mokou Fujiwara, not only putting aside their differences but falling in love with each other, their perfectly opposed personalities notwithstanding.

I've said my say. It's obvious that Gensokyo Island exists for the pursuit of happiness, and everything Okuu's Look-alike has done serves only to further that end. But whose happiness? And at what cost? The answers to these questions are not among the things that I know as if this moment. All that consumes my thoughts are the knowledge that I will inevitably serve as the next sacrifice, regardless of my non-affiliation to this island... and I pray that my sacrifices will continue to bring happiness not only to the residents of Gensokyo Island, but to my parents who loved me, raised me, and even now are watching over me, somewhere.

This has been Toritori fod Bunbunmaru Updates. Good night, and good bye.
